The prime-time soap opens its
seventh season awash in the usual romantic turmoil. Peter realizes he's
not over Amanda, which eventually "will cause him to do something
extraordinary that will put Amanda in jeopardy by the end of the
summer," says co-executive producer Carol Mendelsohn. Meanwhile, Kyle
continues his charade of wooing ex-wife Taylor, believing she can clear
Amanda of blame for the apparent suicide of his ex-girlfriend; and
Michael's loose lips give Megan leverage against him as he returns to
the medical partnership. And in a never-ending circle: Billy steams over
Samantha's affair with Jeff; Jeff continues his pursuit of Sam (thanks
to Jennifer); and Jennifer is still after Billy.

Will Jane Mancini return
to her ex-husband, the skirt-chasing, Jane's-sister-marrying,
cad-about-town Michael? In this episode, the exes hook up at their
college reunion. "Jane and Michael believe they're each other's
true love" says actress Josie Bissett. "Always have been, always
will be." Bissett, who returns to her role, hopes to keep Jane
"a sweet, nice, honorable character," (as opposed to the Jane
who once buried alive her rapist) and notes that viewers will
be seeing "a softer side to Michael." But Michael's portrayer,
Thomas Calabro, hopes it's "just long enough that I can turn
meaner than I ever was before." Meanwhile, a well-connected
former patient agrees to Peter's request for a favor regarding

last season's finale, this pivotal episode marks the end of MP's
seven-show mini-season that provided Fox with original summer
programming. Here, no fewer than five characters depart, but
not before there are some tense moments on a stormy night. Peter
positions himself to be Amanda's hero; Taylor gives birth after
making Jane and Michael agree to raise the child; and Megan
tries to intercede when Coop takes desperate measures to end
his bogus marriage to Lexi. Meanwhile, it appears no one will
emerge happy from the Jeff-Samantha-Billy-Jennifer mess, as the

The series' 200th episode
is the first under new executive producers, who intend to focus
on relationships instead of outrageous plotlines. To that end,
a surprising, but plausible, death opens the show. Amanda receives
the departed's secret journal, which contains damaging information
about several characters. Those secrets include Jane's past
relationship with a designer, and the reason for the rift between
Kyle and his brother Ryan. Kyle and Ryan "really love each other,"
insists Newton, "but it comes out in different ways." To wit, Ryan
uses a fist to say hello. But tonight, Kyle can cool off while
counting his profits, as guest Sean Lennon plays at his club.

As the steamy serial
draws to a close, questions loom about Amanda and the Demarr
murder. Executive producer Aaron Spelling notes: "We talked a
long time about [Amanda's resolution]. I think the audience will
be tricked a little bit...the writers have given her something
quite interesting and charming at the end." He also alluded to
a life-threatening "event" in the final, but emphasized that
"we are going to have closure. I think the audience
deserves that after seven years." Spelling adds: "It's been
a nice ride...maybe a couple of years from now, we could do a
reunion. I'd love that."
