Total Eclipse - Aug 21, 2017

On Aug 21, 2017, I went to Chester, IL, to view the Solar Total Eclipse. I bought their VIP package, which included a 10' x 10' plot of land in which to set up my cameras. Also included was their T-shirt.

The location was a baseball field in the Cohen Complex (37° 55' 49.2" N, 89° 50' 32.8" W). I was in a perfect spot on the due north end of the field, up against the fence.

This is a composite of the images on this page, except for the five at the bottom of the image. They are a reference as to how dark it was getting. There were a few more images taken, but they were too dark to be included. They were all taken at 1/800, f/11, ISO 200. The times are (left to right): 11:47:31, 12:00:00, 12:30:01, 12:45:01, 13:00:00.

This is the calculated eclipse data for the Cohen Complex.
  • Camera/lens: Nikon D800 w/ Nikkor 500mm f/8 reflex. I expected the images to be sharper than what they actually are. After all, it is a Nikkor lens.
  • Unless otherwise noted, the exposure is 1/1000, f/8, ISO 200.
  • The images are cropped from the full-frame 36 Mpixel image.
  • Look carefully and you can see sunspots (three in a line).
  • The camera is not on a polar mount, so this results in a twisting of the images as the camera pans the sky.
  • All times are CDT.
